The Medicine Cabinet

Image
Do any of you readers out there still have a medicine cabinet? I don't mean the fancy mirrored item purchased from a home supplies chain store that sits above your bathroom sink either :). I mean the real old fashioned deal. The made from wood kind that extended quite a bit from the wall and were closed with a small latch. Well I actually live in a house that has such a contraption and I know for sure that it is older than I am. While the medicine cabinet of my childhood was affixed to my parents' bedroom wall, this one juts out next to my bath stall and I love it.     Thought of painting it once then changed our minds, like the wood.:) Front view...mirror bringing in light from opposite window. Notice the little top latch and the wooden knob! But what can you find in a medicine cabinet?  I know I still keep some of the staples my mother did!  Like Iodex, Vicks vapour rub, BNT powder, Spirits of Turpentine and a few new additions of my own. I Believe.......do You?

I believe the children are the future. Do you? I sincerely hope you do because this statement happens to be literally correct and has been proven time and again throughout human existence :). We all  need to collectively accept this great responsibility of raising our next generation to the best of our and their abilities. Hence I take my job as a teacher very seriously. Not that I am a severe or serious teacher, but for me, the task of shaping future adult minds is a great and auspicious one. No matter what you do for a living, you have been influenced by a teacher. Over the years, I have documented many a teacher moment and often peruse them and wonder what the future holds for my charges. Time will tell. But I enjoy every moment of it. Maybe because I love what I do and what I teach. Be it art or science, accompanying students on tours or teaching the "core" subjects, I believe we are constant learners and there is great fun in the learning process. I think

Drill Hall Beach, still an option!

One Sunday morning we set out on our usual walk about with the plan to head to some beach. I love that we have a choice of beaches all within walking distance :). As we walked pass excellent familiar favourites such as Browne's Beach and Pebbles Beach , we kept going and settled for the beach at Drill Hall . It even has a little reef. Drill Hall sits smack dab in the historic Garrison Savannah area with the Graves End Military Cemetery and Needham's Lighthouse to its left, the Barbados Defence Force Headquarters and Garrison Savannah  itself directly ahead. We all savoured the many sights, sounds and smells along the way and the little ones had fun exploring the plant and animal life on the reef. Hope you enjoy them all as well. We entered from the military cemetery . Soo many almond trees...... and almonds!!!!! Many people are not familiar with the almond as a fruit.......here it is :) Also plenty coconuts...... notice how th

K O L I J......Kolij

This week was a quite nostalgic and emotional one for me. My daughter continued the tradition of both her parents in entering the world renowned  Harrison College at Crumpton Street. She joins not only myself and her dad but five of our island's Prime Ministers and several Governors General to list just a few. To say that Harrison College has a tradition of excellence in education is no idle boast. Founded in 1733 by a Bridgetown merchant Thomas Harrison , Kolij (as it's known to its alumni) has earned the stellar reputation of being the most prestigious secondary school in the entire British West Indies. Many affluent persons throughout the Caribbean have opted to have their wards enrolled there for this very reason. Kolij has retained many of its traditional practices and standards. It was very amusing to discover it has also held on to much of its old furniture....lol. The lever-operated chalkboards in classrooms have been replaced by tech savvy whiteboards but my daughte
