Walking is such excellent exercise. It's actually my preferred form of fitness. Unlike running, it's easy on the joints and you get to thoroughly enjoy your surroundings at the same time. Another added benefit of walking for me personally, is the opportunity to harvest freely from nature. I am constantly on the lookout for new plants, wild herbs, items to reuse or recycle or just interesting photos.
It is such a simple joy though to find some random object on a walk, take it home and create something new. This is my favourite.
Over the years, we have collected: Branches
|
Branches make interesting towel racks |
|
Or walking sticks |
Shells offer endless possibilities
|
As plant pots for runners |
Or just decorative items
|
Painted door jams |
Since we are loosing so much of our land to housing projects, I harvest wild herbs and bring home to plant.
Nettle
|
Italian Senna...soooo sticky |
And of course containers for planting. My fellow blogger friend
Yendys Nefer Atum always comments on how she loves my garden because of the many differing pots, tubs etc I use. If only she knew that most are recycled. A real testament to "one man's garbage is another man's treasure."
And of course, fresh flowers. I am always a little frustrated that persons here buy artificial flowers. It really seems so silly to be surrounded by fresh plants so rich with oxygen, then opt for plastic or silk flowers for the home. I love nothing more than to take cuttings from abandoned gardens for my floral arrangements. |
I loveeee Xioras
|
And sunflowers.
|
Jamaican Ackee |
And of course because of our tropical weather, we easily find fruit on any walk.
|
Sapotes
I could go on and on because walking has indeed been a treasure trove in our lives, but life calls so I'll leave you with this really unique mushroom we spotted. Remember calling them duppy umbrellas?...lol
Have a great one Barbados. It's super hot so stay cool.
Maybe grab a friend later and take a stroll, see what you find.
